Well Water Testing?

Since many homes have private wells, and many home owners are not knowledgeable about well water testing, we put together this FAQ.

My house has a well, should I be doing any testing on it?

Yes! It is generally accepted that all water sources for human consumption should be frequently tested and inspected. Public sources are regulated and tested under EPA, and local guidelines.

Isn't my well water already tested by the EPA?

The EPA has no jurisdictional control of private drinking water wells.

Ok, can my well water source go bad? If so how?

Is it is accepted, that under today's rules and regulations Aquifers are protected to some extent. So the likely hood of it going 'bad' is slim. Still possible, since we have accidents (poorly installed wells, overturned fuel trucks, pesticides, etc). So when you test your water supply, you are also testing the quality of water from the aquifer.

Ok, if the aquifer is relatively safe, what about my well itself?

Well have been known to develop problems; infiltration of mice and bugs; surface flood waters entering the well; or components failing with time. This is why you need to test your well water regularly.

I'm convinced, what well water testing should be done.

Well water testing usually involves testing the water for indications of 'impurities':
  • Well Water Bacteria - The well water is tested for coliform and e. coli bacteria(possible sources: human and animal fecal wastes, failed septic tank, etc). This identifies any well water potability issues
  • Nitrates/Nitrites - The well water is tested for the presence/concentration of nitrates and nitrites(possible sources: fertilizer, human and animal wastes). Well water infiltrated with chemicals is a risk to the whole family.
  • Turbidity - The well water is tested for 'cloudiness', 'haziness'. More non-soluble impurities in the well water, the higher the turbidity.
